PJ Harvey's new single The Wind, the second off her Is This Desire? album, is a prime example of Harvey's skewed but utterly accessible bluesy pop. Beginning sparsely, her whispered tones inveigle menacingly, ("Catherine likes high places, high up on the hill"), conjuring up Tom Waits, before the syncopated organic beats and judicious strings usher in her beautiful, scuffed-folk voice and the chorus, "Listen to the wind blow." An understated triumph.
